This is certainly a fine idea. We're looking into the feasibility of pulling this off.

Thanks for the great suggestion, Kevin.

Wow, that is so cool! Hoep you can pull this off!

Neat idea, but wouldn't this smell commercial suicide? I mean, I don't think many people remember this old comic book series.

Then again, I was convinced that "Legacy" would be a major fiasco (because of its unusual format), and look how well it ended up doing.
it's a nice idea indeed. Here are some of my thoughts on the subject:

*A flip-book like Sharp suggested seems like the best idea
*I agree that it should look like a King book more than a Charlton book – although technically it was Charlton that decided to skip #29, after King had ended their run with #28 and Charlton picked it up over a year later. However, the Phantom logo was the same for King #28 and Charlton #30, and that's the most important thing to retain, I think.
*I don't think the art style has to resemble Bill Lignante or any particular artist from this era, just that it shuold have a general "retro" style with simpler layouts, no "bleeds", simpler coloring etc.
*Ed Rhoades' column for this issue should definetely focus on the "missing #29" and tell a little more about it and the Gold Key, King and Charlton Phantom comics for fans who don't know much about this.
*The marketing should focus on "a bonus story" and not "the missing #29" since, as Walker points out, no new Phantom readers know what the heck that refers to. Let the newbies find out what the #29 fuss is all about when they have bought the book and get to read Ed's column on the matter.
I couldn't agree more, Andreas!

As to whether it is in a "King" or "Charlton" style cover matters little, since the logo will be Moonstone's, just done in a "retro" style. The Phantom logo is the important piece. The only reason I suggested a Charlton-style publishing logo is that there might be more of us "bronze-agers" around that would remember their logo before we would recall a "King-style" logo (confusing, isn't it?!?)

Since this would be a flip book, the "retro" story would be like all Phantom stories back then, that is, a 7-8 page anthology. It would need no set up, since it is a short story (anthology!).

As far as newbies, maybe after they read Ed Rhoades' column, it would give them an interest in seeking out these "old gems", although many would probably debate if they are "gems".

The most important point of all of this is to make it fun or have fun with it. For goofy completists (like me), it would be a way to have a retro # 29 and a current # 29. And since I would buy 2 copies, that means more money for Moonstone! Everybody wins!

Great points, Andreas! Thanks for your interest and input!
