The Phantom was returned to one paper after fans protested. Now there's a discussion over at the Daily Cartoonist where it is being claimed the Phantom has run its course...

Bah! Naughty
That guy has no idea what he's talking about.

Quote:
As a non-comics person, he had the audacity to drop “The Phantom” during the middle of a climatic episode in the serial in order to pick up Mark Tatulli’s Lio which was esteemed to be more appealing to the younger crowd. The Phantom crowd came out of the woodwork - mostly older readers.

And there in lies the problem. As far as I can tell The Phantom, in Australia at least, is mainly supported by older readers. A comic who's fan base is mainly older will eventualy die out as - ahem - they do. Sure I know there are a number of younger Phantom phans around but are there enough?

Things are beginning to look up with new, younger audences comeing over to check out the Moonstone stuff and I know Egmont aims it's books towards a younger audience so perhaps we are safe there.

Here in Australia thought Frew is doing nothing to bring in new readers, which is my main fault with them. Thank God we can get Moonstone books here.

Hello

Is that true? Frew print all new Egmont stories, as well as a number of classics every year. What more do young readers want?

NEVER
How about something to gai ntheir attention, something that shows Frew are doing something to get the book out of the "my granddad used to read this" vibe that still lingers.

Do you mean that Jim should start producing Moonstone material in his comics?

Pip

No, that is not what I mean at all. But how about publsihing multipul part stories in order so new comers aren't at the risk of being confused. Presenting the comic a little better, and not giveing away the ending of the stories in his opening introduction. Returning the letters page would be good too as younger fans like to see that folks read the letters they send ot their comics.
