In this interview, and several others, we've heard tidbits about a still unannounced special project featuring the Man Who Cannot Die.

So when will we get some more information on this one? Any hints on what it MIGHT be? Another wide vision book? A Phantom novel ( Pray )? A second regularly running Phantom book featuring historical Phantoms? A Phantom animated series? A Phantom tie-in deal with McDonald's? Okay, maybe my imagination were running wild on the two last points, but you get my point: I am very curious.
I can't really let much out of the bag, but I can tell you it's a 4-issue mini series that will run in standard comic format and exist outside the continuity established in the ongoing series. You'll have to wait for more details... sorry.
Excellent. I assume you will have a really special story to tell since you're not using the regular books, so I am looking forward to hearing more about this one, whenever you CAN let something out of the bag. Grin
Thanks for the information.

I wouldn't say it's any more special than any other story in the ongoing series, but it will have a different vibe to it and a different look to the artwork. The story will also not fall into the same time lines, so we thought it best to do it as a "special project".

In other countries, he does have that popularity and more. Here in the US, I think it has to do with the nature of ownership of the character. Since he’s not part of the giant merchandising machine that is Marvel Comics, or owned by an arm of Warner Brothers, he’s never had the exposure that the Bat and Spider have. You enter a store and see Spider-Man greeting cards, Batman alarm clocks, and Superman party favors. The stuff permeates US culture. The Phantom cannot be found there; hence, his presence isn’t reinforced in our minds, as it is with those other heroes.

I do wonder if there's something more deeper than just simply merchandising. I agree, I think that the money behind Marvel and DC (AKA Warner Bros.) have a lot to do with the popularity of Batman and Spider-man.

But like Paul Ryan also said in another interview. The Phantom's setting mostly a jungle makes him hard to relate to, or limits his story telling capabilities. I hope that we have a lot more jet setting stories or stories that take place outside of the Benghalla. I always saw The Phantom more of a global hero than anything else.

The second is very difficult for me to say. I love the Phantom to death. In light of the day and time we live in. There is something of the character which screams 'colonialism' and 'white man's burden'.

It's like we have this white European man who has to solve problems/defend Africa. As if Africans are unable to to defend themselves or dispense justice. In a way there seems to be a sense of condescension. Sometimes think that these stories would be better for Black Pathar (T'challa).
