Ok, I admit I'm a newbie when it comes to The Phantom. I do own all the Moonstone Phantom books, but that's it (and the really cool Randy Bowen bust). But last night as I was reading the latest issue I wondered something. The Phantom mantle gets passed down from Father to Son through the ages, but does the name Kit go with it as well? Does Kit Walker have to marry someone named Diana? I know it sounds stupid, but in the comic he is married to Diana, and the Phantom from the movie (sorry) hooked up with a Diana as well. Now, they can't be the same Phantom because the comic takes place now, and the movie was in the 1930's.
What happens when Kit has 2 sons? Do they both get named Kit? Does only one take over the Phantom mantle?
I apologize if these are really stupid questions, but The Phantom is quickly becoming one of my favourite comics.
And while Im rambling, anybody else like to see a Black Coat/Phantom crossover?
If you don't know who The Black Coat is, google it. Its a great comic as well.
Thanks,
MikeM
Not a stupid question, I can understand how it may seem strange to a "newbie"
The Phantom in the movie is the same Phantom as the one you read about in Moonstone's books: The 21st Phantom. When Lee Falk created the Phantom in 1936, it was about the 21st Phantom, and he met Diana early on in the first story. Like Superman, Spider-Man, Batman and many other comic heroes, the 21st Phantom has not aged like the world around him. He is always in his 30's (more or less), and the stories about the 21st Phantom always take place in "present time".
However, when the movie was made in 1996, the producers chose to base it on the very first Phantom stories – and kept the 1930's setting. Not the best choice in my opinion, but that's how it is.
And yes, every Phantom since the first one, has been given the same name. But they don't all have to marry a Diana
Lee Falk wrote a story where a Phantom some hundreds of years ago had four sons – all named Kit. (a little cheesy perhaps, I must admit). In this case it was actually the youngest who took over as Phantom, because he was the only one who really wanted the "job".
The Black Coat was a new name to me. Looks interesting.
I am a HUGE Black Coat fan and a cross over with The Phantom would be brilliant. I read all four issues this summer since discovering it at San Diego (thanks, Raf) and meeting Ben and Francesco. The first collected trade is out now and I highly recommend it. Francesco is now doing Fear Agent, another of my favorite books, and then I believe he is returning to the Black Coat.
Maybe, we can convince him to then do the cross over...

Not stupid questions at all mate, when I was first introduced to The Phantom I had similar such questions. Heck, I've been reading the Phantom for a good 6 years and I didn't even know the answer to one of your questions:

That's very interesting at all. Do you remember what the name of the story is Andreas?
Yeah, it's "The Fourth Son", a Sunday strip story from 1991-92. Published by Frew in No.1019.
Thanks Andreas

I always thought if there was more than one some the first born was Kit and the second was Christopher. Hmmm
In the Egmont version of the Phantom, all sons are named Christopher, and Kit is their nick-name. As far as I know, Lee Falk never used the name Christopher (with the exception of Christopher Standish in the first story), only Kit.
