This is an advanced review shot of Clash #1 & #2, a new comic series from Moonstone Books premiering soon. Clash stands for Citizen’s League Against Super-Humans. There is a LOT going on in the first two issues with many different characters and plot elements.

Earth had been invaded by an alien race resulting in the deaths of millions. Many of those who were “lucky” enough to survive were mutated into disfigured, cannibalistic humanoids. The combined power of the normal humans and super heroes eventually repelled the invaders. Out of this war emerged the Protectorate, Super-Heroes who’ve decided that they will make the superior leaders for the world. They keep the humans in line with an army of annihilator robots. Instead of alien oppressors, the human race now has super-human oppressors.

A small band of mercenaries rise up against the tyranny of the Protectorate. They are the CLASH, costumed heroes who use hi-tech weapons in their battle with the Protectorate. The team is led by Dusk who has preferred to wage the war in the shadows, using covert operations such as hijacking powerful weapons. But not every member of the team agree with his tactics. The Protectorate stages a mass transit train derailment in order to have one of their new heroes save the day and to gain public trust. Wrath, a rogue member of Clash interferes, preventing the train’s rescue leading to the death of hundreds. Wrath then takes the battle straight to the Protectorate stronghold leading him into conflict with the rest of the Clash team.

As I said, there is a lot going on in these first two issues. Lots of characters, lots of names, aliens, mutants, etc…I found myself a bit lost in the first issue trying to figure out who everyone was and who I was supposed to be rooting for. Thankfully a brief synopsis was provided at the start of issue #2, which got me up to speed pretty quickly. The plot of super types as tyrants isn’t anything new and we really don’t see much from the Protectortate’s perspective until near the end of issue number two, at which point we can surmise that they are a bunch of megalomaniacs bent on keeping their control by any means possible, including mass-murder.

One thing I hope to see as the story unfolds is to see more of a back-story on the various characters on both sides. Were thrust right into the middle of chaotic events and the action keeps the pace moving very fast so the story is never dull, but I want to learn more about all of these characters. The series was created by Greg Karras and Cory Hamscher. Karras is the regular series writer and Hamscher provides the covers as well as the interior art on the first issue. Anthony Tan takes over the art shores for issue #2.

I really like what I see in these first two issues. It’s an exciting story and I suspect there’s more at play than has been revealed so far. This is one to keep an eye out for. 4 ½ out of 5 Stars.
