Welcome to the Moonstone Forums Biddamo
I read this comic today, and thought it was bloodyawesome.
The first story (the Phantom one) from Mike and Silvestre Szilagyi, was REALLY good. Silvestre's art was once again flawless. He's really becoming a favourite of mine. Thought MIke's script was also REALLY good, had some good humour moments in there but there were also some really cool action scenes. Loved the ending. Top notch guys.
The second story, the Kolchak one... well, I'd have to say that was completely random...but I also thought this story was great! Somehow I should have guessed Dave Ulanski would've come up with such a wacky script
Had some really good Kolchak moments and like I said.. it was random. And random is good
The 3rd story (the Spider) was also rock solid. Having never read a Spider story I didn't quite know what to expect apart from a lot of violence. But I found that there was more to this story then just pointless violence, there was a damsel indistress, a very cool bad guy.. and an awesome character such as the Spider dominating the page. Plus the art was really cool as well. Man, I have really got to get my hands on the Spider Chronicles now...
The Sherlock Holmes and Buckaroo Banzai stories were the weakest of all 5 stories for me. Both had some nice art, but sadly the scripts didn't do all that much for me.
Overall though, a really great collection with a cool cover (I got the "A" cover)
Hopefully this sells well enough for there to be more such comics in the future
I have to say that I thought that the Buckaroo Banzai story was weak and confusing -- just a rather lame Christ child parallel.
On the other hand, I really laughed out loud with the Kolchak -- nice use of the "A Christmas Story" connection.
I had especially purchased the comic for the Sherlock Holmes, which was nicely executed.
Buying a Christmas theme comic is always a question for me, since I'm Jewish and the plots always seem to be either lame and new or just new riffs on "A Christmas Carol" or "It's a Wonderful Life".
Took me awhile, but I finally got a copy.
My thoughts:
Phantom: Great action scenes, sweet ending, but that guy in the truck that wouldn't shut up got on my nerves.
Kolchak: Great monster, but by the end I was kind of sick of Christmas story in jokes. One of two ( especially the lamp one, that was great) but it seemed like there was one every page. We got it already.
Spider: That was brilliant. Everything was right on the money. This is the Spider in all his surreal, violent glory.
Holmes: felt very much like a Conan-Doyle story just readapted for the comic. Nice. That last page gag was a bit weak though.
Buckaroo: A wild, and odd take on Christmas icons. Wonder if Wackenbush will become a reoccurring bad guy?
But, in the next Buckaroo adventure can we do it without any aliens?
This was lots of fun. Hope it becomes a yearly tradition.
