The Phantom #20 (Moonstone Comics)
By Mike Bullock, Zeu, and Marat Mychaels
One of the really cool things about the Phantom is how far back the legacy of the character runs. This issue the current Phantom (#21) brings his children to the chronicles of his family and tells them a tale of Phantom #13, who was fighting a band of three Musketeers (but not those three Musketeers) to retrieve from them a priceless treasure called the Heart of Lafitte that they wish to return to the King of France. The Phantom, however, has different ideas about who the Heart truly belongs to. Bullock is obviously having fun with this character, taking advantage of his unique status to tell a story like this one that simply wouldn't work in modern-day. Zeu's artwork is quite good as well -- he does a fine job on the pirate scenes, giving us a grand, swashbuckling adventure on the high seas.
This is a story that simply couldn't be told with any other superhero-type character in comics, and that's what makes it a perfect story to give to the Phantom.
