Also, what will inspire this take on the character the most, the wildly imaginative Falk/Phil Davis years, or the slightly more realistic, thriller-like Falk/Fredericks years?

Mandrake's dabbled in pretty much every imaginable genre, everything from sci-fi to light humour, and I imagine it must be a real gift of a character for a writer.
Without even an iota of doubt, its great, great, great news that Moonstone has finally decided to present new Mandrake stories in his very own comics book.
Mandrake fans will support my statement that our favorite magician is no less entertaining and interesting than the biggest names of comicdom like batman or Spiderman, and it’s a pity that no one thought of writing new stories of mandrake more suited to comics book medium compared to newspaper strips. However, Moonstone and Mike Bullock are doing it now, and they deserve to be congratulated to for taking this correct decision.
As a mandrake fan, I will urge all fellow fans of the magician to be patient for a while before passing judgment on Moonstone’s efforts, because it’s unfair to expect that Moonstone will be able to create that precise magic from their first story that masters like Falk and presently Fredericks have created since 1934. But all the best to Moonstone for this project.
The pages are being colored right now and it looks like we should have some "sneak peek" stuff very soon. thumbs up
Can't wait!

Now look at this...
Mandrake's look has been updated slightly, with a slightly more modern style of facial hair and a groovy haircut. Looks great in every way, and this is what I imagine Jonathan Rhys Meyers could look like in the movie version.

But is this from the Annual or the comic book series?

That's from "Jewel..."

Interesting. Nice find, walker
Thanks, Dougy.

I am looking forward to get previews of cover art and such, and get a better look at Mandrake's new style. That is one cool hairstyle.

Is the bald man behind Mandrake in the first frame Lothar?

Also, another question I hope Mike could answer here... I always saw Mandrake as Falk's opportunity to REALLY let his imagination flow into as many crazy directions as he wanted, whereas the Phantom had to be a bit more grounded to remain believable. Do you feel this way when being the first writer since Lee to write both characters at once? Are you intending to mix as many different genres (sci-fi, fantasy, crime, melodrama, humour) into Mandrake as Falk did? Part of the series appeal for me was always that it is so incredibly varied, never really repeating itself, and it would be cool to see this continue in Moonstone's stories.

I haven't really looked at it as something I need to frame into specific genres. I do think that both characters have TONS of untapped potential, which speaks to the sheer genius of the man who invented them.

And, honestly, I didn't know I was the first since Mr. Falk to write them both... That's pretty darn cool, if I do say so myself. Dance

Thanks for the answer!

Yes, I believe you are the only one besides Falk and possibly Fellini (off all people!) who have written these characters at once, and if that's not an honour, nothing is. Clap Grin03 (man, these smileys are neat)
