A very interesting issue, I can’t wait to see where this goes. I’m so glad that Ali is back, I really enjoyed him in #1-2. I have decided that it’s Mike’s top-notch writing that makes these issues feel so short – my mind just eats up everything in the issue and desperately wants more!

To issue specific notes; perhaps I wasn’t paying attention, but is this the first time we’ve seen the UAFM and BFA? I assume that the UAFM were who Ali had working for him in Stones of Blood or are they displaced men who had followed HIM and now need a new cause to fight for? Also, I’m not really clear on the BFA. They seem against the UAFM but they are not above their methods (e.g., taking their battles into innocent villages) and both the Phantom and the JP treated both factions as terrorists. I hope we get more insight into these groups in further issues.

It’s interesting that again Diana is trying to pass a bill for 3rd world support. I wonder if the Third World, First Step paper is an evolution of Resolution Ten – Thirteen from issues #1-2 and if it will come into play later on.

I really enjoyed the issue opening with the terrorists shooting all over the place then to have the Phantom come in and disarm them with a few perfectly aimed shots. Really showed just how good he is and it was worth a chuckle.

So it seems that the new Singh leader (can’t recall his name) has payed off some important people to get Ali out of gaol. I wonder how far his connections go and what the Singhs’ involvement in the over all plan is.

As moving and shocking as it was to see Diana’s plain blown to smithereens common sense tells me she isn’t dead, but I’m looking forward to seeing what is going on with her.

And that last frame, couples with the Old Jungle Saying….oooh man, someone is in for an ass-kickin’!

If I have one complaint about the issue it has to be the “whisper bubbles.” I don’t know if the dotted line was supposed to match the contours of the bubble and something went wrong but the way they are they look really messy. Also, on page 21, frame 4 I think Luaga and the generals’ speech bubbles got mixed up.

Other than that another very good issue.
thumbs up

Quite often, warring factions are two sides of the same coin. They may claim to fight for different ideals, but at the end of the day, their "means to an end" are no different at all...

We're still trying to figure out what happened there. The proofs aren't like that, but the printed book is...

As someone who has felt the last several issues of your regular Phantom title was "under-dialogued", I found this issue to be a treat! Number 21 would be an excellant standard for the story to art ratio of future issues.
Wow, Mike, that is just W-I-E-R-D! I hope you guys can figure out the problem because it really effect the look of the books. The proof sheet there looks damn sexy!

Just because it's true doesn't mean you have to say it.

Nice review, Germ. I just want to let you know the creative team has nothing to do with the speed of each issue hitting the shelves. While Marvel, DC etc have the financial ability to put out hundreds of books each month, most (if not all) small press publishers don't (not to mention, most printers and distributors don't give the same level of service to small press publishers as they do to the big boys).

Moonstone could have 10 stories written, drawn, colored & lettered every month and still not be able to get the book to come out any faster. Right now, Silvestre is finishing up issue 24, I'm finishing the script for #25, just finished plotting #26 and thinking up plot elements for 27-29. I'd actually be a lot further along, except I had to take a sidebar to work on the Mandrake teaser and the Phantom Annual #2.

So, while it would be great to have the book come out every week, or even guaranteed every month, the schedule it's currently on is the best that can be done right now (it is supposed to come out near the end of every month during the arcs and take a one month break between arcs, but various snafus that occur after the creation of the actual comic always seem to crop up).

Granted, things change every day, so something might happen tomorrow that makes all this moot, but I think we all deserve at least a little credit for getting the book out as fast as we have over the last ten issues... What?

I haven't read the entire thread in fear for spoilers (my issue is hopefully arriving soon), but I have to say I would definetely not even think about complaining about the regularity the book comes out... Remember, it's not that long since it felt like we got a new issue every fifth month or so, due to some unfortunate delays. After issue 12, the production has been great; we get even better stories that seems to appeal to even more fans, excellent articles, AND the book comes out regularly.

The only "negative" thing for me personally is that due to the book coming out this often, Moonstone takes more of my money. wink
Thanks for pointing all that out Mike!

btw was it just me or is the cover better quality in cardboard? It feels stiffer!

You're welcome. I hope you understand now. Trust me, if we could, the book would be weekly.

And yes, the cover is on premium card stock now. Dance
