I've always wondered how the ring "worked." I never thought a skull ring would actually leave a skull shaped bruise on a face. Great article.
Another very imformative article from EdGrin There's always something in these aticles that I've didn't previously know.

Oh, and this is completely of topic but Ghost Who Naps, your avatar is pretty coolcool
Thanks. If you go to the deviant art website and search for the phantom head you'll find the original.

Has anyone ever tried to punch someone with a phantom ring to see if it leaves a skull mark?Aiwebs_009

I haven't personally, but the guys from Mythbusters have, and here's what they found out...

Quote:
A superhero can punch a person so hard, he can leave a scar that matches the imprint on his ring. This myth was based on the comic book superhero "The Phantom."

First, the Build Team measured the force of their punches, and compared them to the punching strength of professional fighters. Grant then constructed a punching robot that could replicate these forces. Meanwhile, Tory constructed a ballistics gel fist while Kari designed the rings out of sterling silver. For the target, the Build Team obtained a human skull and stretched pig skin over it to simulate human skin. Punching the head with Tory’s level of strength caused some damage, but did not produce a ring-imprinted scar. The professional fighter’s level of strength produced similar results. The Build Team then used superhero level strength which crushed the skull. The Build Team concluded that a punch powerful enough to leave an imprint of their ring would most likely crush the victim’s skull, killing him.

Thanks to Trimmer for this information.

Wow. I need to look that episode up.
I've seen the episode, but I think they did it wrong. They should have used a skull ring that has a jagged edge. That's how I've heard the function of the skull ring be explained - it's not just a bruise, it's a permanent scar.
I don't think that would work either to be honest, unless you pressed down on a face like making an imprint in play dough. I think the magic or voodoo explantion works best because it doesn't have to make sense.Grin03
I saw those guys recently and was hoping to talk with them about it, but there were thousands of people in the audience and the lines to ask questions were very long. I enjoy their show and they ended the discussion with a video compilaton of explosions from the show.

However, they pretty much based their ring experiment on the type of ring worn by Billy Zane which required magic.
One of the George Wilson Avon paperback covers suggests scarring. One of the Charlton comics explains it as a rare jungle dye. A combination would be a tattoo.
One of the Egmont stories gave the ring mystical powers saying it was made from nails from Christ's cross.
I prefer to think of it as non magical.
