The Phantom #23 (Moonstone)
By Mike Bullock, Silvestre Szilagyi & Rick Leonardi
For the Ghost Who Walks, things are going from bad to worse. His wife is dead, and her killers are targeting President Luaga. This issue delves a bit more into the methods of the terrorists, intercutting with scenes of the Phantom on the hunt. Mike Bullock is really great at blending together the classic superhero adventure aspects of the character with a deeper, more timely political thriller. It gives the Phantom a rather unique place among classic superheroes -- nobody else could really tackle these kinds of tales without sounding preachy. What's more, Bullock has had the guts to take some real chances with the character, and so far, they're paying off. Szilagyi's artwork is really good, and a fantastic cover by Rick Leonardi caps the issue off. As usual, this was really strong and a lot of fun.
