I just read an interesting article about Lee Falk in the Friends of the Phantom newsletter (an older issue), by Moonstone's Phantom consultant Ed Rhoades. The following sentence was particularly interesting:

Quote:
Working for a radio station in St. Louis, he penned adventures for pulp-fiction characters like The Shadow and The Spider

I never knew Falk had any involvement with these characters. Kinda strange, now that the Spider, a character I know zero about (other than that he was the inspiration for the Phantom's Skull ring) was recently announced to be starting again here at Moonstone.

Neither did I!! You learn something new everyday! I didn't know Lee had worked on these things either plus I didn't know that he got the idea of th Skull Ring from the Spider! Interesting!

Now wait guys. It said "like the Shadow and the Spider" It didnt specify that he wrote directly for those characters. Still there is no denying that the Phantom is (in my opinion) very much a Pulp type character. Any Phantom Phan would almost be guaranteed to enjoy the pulp heroes. If you've never read any Shadow or Doc Savage outside of the various comic book adaptations I highly reccomend them to you. The comics rarely do them justice. Yes there has been some very good Shadow stuff done in comics but it still doesnt compare to the original pulp tales. WHICH by the way are being officially reprinted by Nostalgia press in double volumes.

I'm sorry if I misunderstood the sentence; but I thought it basically meant that he wrote the Shadow and the Spider, among others. Whistle Doh
